Why use traditional lime?
Lime is a calcium carbonate. When burnt and slaked with water it forms a putty which when mixed with aggregate produces a traditional mortar or render.
Lime carbonises in air which allows the masonary and plaster to breathe and remain flexible. Standard cement on the other hand, has a chemical set resulting in a hard impervious material which can damage soft stone and brickwork.
Lime is a natural material requiring less energy to convert and can be stored indefinitely if kept airtight.
Chalk Down Lime Ltd produce their matured lime putty in the traditional way by slaking quicklime under water. This method produces a superior product putty.
We offer a range of specialist products for use in conservation repairs and in new build using traditional methods and materials.
