Lime is the traditional binder used for centuries all around the world for constructing all types of buildings and structures from garden walls to castles. When chalk or limestone is burnt then re-hydrated (or ‘slaked’) under an excess of water it forms a putty or a non-hydraulic ‘fat lime’. This is mixed with sand or aggregates to produce a very versatile, cost effective, & easy to use mortar, plaster or render; suitable for most internal and external applications for heritage work or new build alike. Lime sets or ‘carbonises’ in the air, using Co² from the atmosphere off- setting some of the carbon from it’s original manufacture; making it a very sustainable and eco-friendly product as well as versatile building material. Lime mortars are flexible and allow masonry and plaster to ‘breathe’ resulting in less cracking, moisture retention & healthier homes to live in. Widely used modern gypsum or cement based building products have a chemical set resulting in a very hard impervious material which, if used inappropriately, on older buildings and structures, over time can damage the softer fabric often associated with older buildings and structures.

In the main, traditional construction works on the premise of solid walls usually with a mix of timber and masonry. Buildings & structures were designed to be breathable and to allow movement and adjust to seasonal changes in the weather. Well ventilated homes and the use of good quality natural materials, normally local to the area, and adopted by highly skilled craftsmen were standard practise of the time.
